Oonagh O'Reilly shares her goal setting experiences

My Goal Setting Experiences

Phew! There is such an abundance of information on goal setting. But I want to share with you my experiences on setting goals…..

I have experienced the magic of writing down a few ‘impossible’ goals I wanted to achieve, sticking them somewhere visible…and was blown away when they all came true!

The thing is, I had wanted to achieve some pretty seismic shifts in my life for quite a while – months, in fact – but until I was brave enough to commit my intentions to a huge piece of coloured paper and stick it above my bedroom door in plain sight, I was always focusing on the obstacles instead of allowing for infinite possibility.

I can’t be any more scientific than this about my own experience, but I promise you there’s magic in writing down your goals and seeing them out of the corner of your eye every day! At the time that I dared to try this (and it really did feel daring at the time to commit my dearest wishes to paper in case their physical presence mocked me every day instead of came true) I had every reason to be skeptical.

This is just a taste of what I was aiming for and (perceived that) I was up against:

Goals and Dreams

Perceived Obstacles

Achieved - Yay!

Get fit and lose 50kg (from a size 28 to a size 8-10)

Emigrate to Australia on a business visa (securing employment in advance) and obtaining Citizenship

Re-establish myself all over again in Sydney (personally and professionally) in order to live by the ocean

I had a history of eating disorders and no track record of success, just self-sabotage

I didn't even have the funds for an exploratory trip, let alone any contacts in Australia (I'd only visited briefly once before)

I had a dream career path in breakfast TV, uncommon outside of London, with friends and family in the UK who were difficult to leave

Got fit, lost 50kg in 10 months, 10 yrs ago and kept it all off

I arrived on a Sunday; sent CVs on Monday; interviews Tuesday and Wednesday; had offers by the Thursday!

Tick, tick, tick...all within 1 yr of goal-setting and a few months after arriving (ocean-living heaven!)

Once I committed my goals to paper something shifted. I found myself stating my dreams as facts just waiting to happen, and in response the Universe magically conspired in my favour! Suddenly I saw opportunity everywhere…and better still it seemed to come looking for me. Just as ‘like attracts like’, the more I sought to pursue every opportunity and cultivate ‘opportunistic thinking’ by asking myself “How can I..?” rather than “Can I..?”, so I became a magnet for opportunity by vibrating on the same level as people ready, willing and able to help.

I have since learned that Dr John Demartini (who has studied the equivalent of about 260 different ‘-ologies’ to PhD standard just to understand the commonality of Universal Laws across all disciplines) describes this as, “that which you seek, also seeks you.”

What I can tell you from personal experience is that all of my so-called obstacles simply melted away one way or another (sometimes through the most incredibly ‘coincidental’ chain of events!) as the goals I had committed to began to take on a life of their own. I achieved every single goal (and more) within 6-12 months of writing them down….so you could say that now I’m somewhat of a zealous convert when it comes to goal-setting!
