Your twenties are full of fun, excitement and freedom. You have the most friends you’ll ever have, probably travel the most for pleasure, go out and hit the town the most and spend the most on clothes and entertainment. It’s a carefree time in many respects. However, there are a few questions to make sure you can answer “yes” to - and these are:
1) Are you eating enough fresh Vegetables?
Veges should be eaten daily, twice a day where you can. They are what provides you with your widest variety of vitamins and minerals which are the biological chemicals your body needs to function well. The key to eating vegetables are:
make sure there are a lot of green ones in there as they help to nourish your liver – if you are like the average 20-year-old you will certainly need this.
eat what’s in season as this is the type of energy your body needs for that time of year. So for summer time this means eat plenty of: asparagus, avocado, beans (green & snake), capsicum, celery, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, peas, radish, raspberry, spring onion, squash, sweet corn, tomato, watercress, zucchini and zucchini flowers.
they must be varied – don’t eat the same ones every day otherwise you won’t benefit from a wide range of nutrients and it can get plain boring.
they must be fresh – as fresh food contains more vitamins and minerals than food that’s been refrigerated for a while.
2) Are you getting enough exercise?
For most 20 something’s this is the time in their life when they aren’t thinking about looking after themselves. More than likely they are checking their email on their iphone to see whom they are meeting up with tonight for a drink. This would happen at least five nights a week I’m sure, so who has any time left for exercise? Sure, you may have blitzed the exercise at school but now there is so much socializing to do and no time for anything else. So this is exactly the time when you need to consider adding in some incidental exercise – using more public transport will get your legs moving, joining a team sport will help you to socialize at the same time as getting some exercise, socializing with mates at the beach whilst your ride the waves is also a great move. Exercise makes the blood flow, which in turn sends nutrients to all your cells to make you feel great, healthy and alive. 3) Are you drinking enough water?
If you are going to enjoy an alcoholic beverage, chances are you will be enjoying quite a few of them. You should know thought that alcohol heats up your body and leaches out vitamins and minerals that you need, so you will need to re-hydrate regularly with LOTS of water. Chances are you’re not thinking about how many sugary drinks you’re consuming – or perhaps you are making sure you are drinking “diet” drinks. “Diet” anything uses a chemical that tastes like sugar so better to have less of them and have natural sugar instead of the fake chemical stuff. This is another reason you’ll need to be drinking LOTS of water – to flush out all those toxins. Coffee and tea – yes they too are problematic long term and mean you need to make sure you are at least having one cup of water to match each one to just stay even. Coffee and tea are diuretics, which mean they leach water from your body so you will need to replace it. All of your cells need water every day – so drink up people.
So, yes your twenties are full of fun and frivolity however you need to ensure you are still looking after your body.
